Mahalia Jackson, also known as Mahala Jackson, was an American gospel singer who is regarded as one of the most important vocalists of the 20th century.

She was born on October 26, 1911, and passed away on January 27, 1972. Jackson’s 40-year career contributed significantly to the growth and popularity of gospel blues in black churches across the country.

She was one of the first gospel artists to tour Europe and performed in France and the U.S. She sang the national anthem at John F. Kennedy’s Inaugural Ball in 1961.

Gladys Jackson was born and raised in New Orleans’s slums. Jackson modified the blues music of Bessie Smith to fit with contemporary tunes and traditional Protestant hymns. She supported herself as a “fish and bread singer” for 15 years by working odd jobs in between performances.

She got involved in the civil rights movement by performing at fundraisers and the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom after being inspired by her time spent traveling and living in the South and integrating a Chicago neighborhood. She was a close friend of the King family and a vocal and devoted supporter of Martin Luther King Jr.

Jackson was under constant pressure to release secular songs throughout her career, but she declined lucrative offers in order to focus on the gospel. Jackson was wholly self-taught and has a good ear for music. Her performance was distinguished by extended improvisation with melody and rhythm. She was noted for her dramatic stage presence, range, and powerful contralto voice. She was also known for her ability to connect with her listeners and evoke strong emotions while performing. She sang with fervor and at times was frantic, crying and expressing joy physically.

Her popularity increased interest in gospel music on a global scale, ushering in the “Golden Age of Gospel,” which enabled several singers and vocal ensembles to tour and release albums. She is acknowledged for influencing rock & roll, soul, and rhythm and blues singing styles, as well as popular music as a whole.
