Irish Grinstead, well-known as a member of the R&B girl group 702 throughout the 1990s, has passed away. The individual in question was 43 years old.

According to Cory Taylor, the spokesperson of 702, Grinstead, who formed the musical group 702 together with singers Kameelah Williams and LeMisha Grinstead, passed away on Saturday. Taylor disseminated a message from LeMisha, the sibling and bandmate of Grinstead, which was further published on the social media platform Instagram.

Irish Grinstead reportedly passed away on Saturday. LeMisha conveyed her profound sorrow as she informed the recipient that her beloved sister and confidante had tragically departed earlier that evening.

The individual in question has endured a protracted struggle and has ultimately achieved a state of tranquillity. The young female individual had a level of intelligence and brilliance comparable to the luminous celestial bodies known as stars.

LeMisha said that the subject had not only physical beauty but also exhibited inner beauty. The experience of performing beside her was a source of immense delight that I will hold dear for the whole of my life.

Irish Grinstead Health Condition Before Death

Grinstead struggled with her health in the months leading up to her death. In December 2022, 702 shared on Instagram that Grinstead was taking “a medical leave of absence due to serious medical issues.” The nature of Grinstead’s medical issues was not disclosed in the post.

“It is our hope that she will have a healthy and speedy recovery in the months to come,” the group wrote at the time.

“We ask that at this very difficult time, you please respect our privacy and continue to pray for us as Meelah and Misha continue to navigate and represent 702 for upcoming performances in 2023.”

Grinstead became a household name in music thanks to her membership in 702, whose name takes inspiration from the area code of the members’ hometown Las Vegas. The group debuted in 1996 with the release of the gold-certified album “No Doubt,” which featured the hit single and Missy Elliott’s collaboration “Steelo.”

702 went on to release two more albums, a self-titled sophomore album in 1999 and “Star” in 2003. The group’s “702” album sold 1 million copies and boasted the No. 1 single “Where My Girls At?”

702 Origin

While in high school at the Las Vegas Academy of Arts, Irish Grinstead, Kameelah Williams, and Lemisha Grinstead formed 702, one of the most successful R&B groups of the ’90s.

Originally, the group was a quartet before Irish Grinstead, Irish’s twin sister (who passed away in 2008), decided to leave the group. Despite her departure, her vocals can still be heard on the group’s debut album.

Life After 702 And The Reunion Tour

Kameelah Williams, the primary vocalist of the group, maintained a higher level of prominence compared to the other members as a result of her solo musical endeavours and participation in television appearances.

Subsequently, she collaborated with notable musicians such as Macy Grey and Raphael Saadiq. In the year 2014, the individual in question became a member of the ensemble of R&B Divas Atlanta.

Additionally, she assumed the role of an advocate for raising awareness about autism subsequent to her son Zac’s diagnosis with Autism Spectrum Disorder in 2013. Zac’s father is the musician known as Musiq Soulchild.

Despite the little media coverage surrounding Irish and Lemisha Grinstead, it is noteworthy that 702, like several musical ensembles, separated in order to pursue individual endeavours and prioritise various facets of their personal lives and solo careers.

If one has not previously had the opportunity to attend a 702 concert and experience the whole of their performance, they will now have the ability to fulfil their nostalgic aspirations from the 1990s.

In November 2017, the collective reconvened for its first performance at the Soul Train Music Awards, hence inciting speculation over a potential reunion like that of their contemporaries Xscape (now Xscap3) and SWV.

Despite the absence of new musical releases from 702 since the early 2000s, the group has made the decision to rejoin and embark on a tour in the next year. This endeavour will provide fans with the opportunity to either revisit the group’s most popular songs or encounter them for the first time.
