Katalin “Kati” Karikó, a well-known Hungarian-American biochemist who was born on January 17, 1955, is known for her knowledge of ribonucleic acid (RNA) mechanisms, particularly in the area of in vitro-transcribed messenger RNA (mRNA) for protein replacement therapy.

The invention of mRNA vaccines, a ground-breaking accomplishment that overcame significant challenges and criticism in the scientific community, was made possible in large part by Karikó’s innovative scientific achievements. In 2023, she and American immunologist Drew Weissman were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their outstanding contributions.

From 2006 through 2013, Karikó was instrumental in co-founding and acting as CEO of RNARx. Later, from 2013 until 2022, she held key positions at BioNTech RNA Pharmaceuticals, first as a vice president, and then as a senior vice president in 2019. Karikó decided to leave BioNTech in 2022 to devote more of her time to research. Throughout her career, she has worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania and later as a professor at Hungary’s University of Szeged.

Among Karikó’s many accomplishments is her ground-breaking scientific research on RNA-mediated immune activation. Her work with Drew Weissman resulted in the discovery of nucleoside alterations that can lower RNA’s immunogenicity, a pivotal finding that has important ramifications for mRNA therapies.

She and Weissman are the owners of US patents covering the use of RNA that has had its nucleosides changed. By obtaining a license for this ground-breaking technology, BioNTech and Moderna were able to create their COVID-19 vaccines as well as other protein replacement technologies.

Katalin Karikó’s salary

Katalin Karikó’s annual salary and cumulative career earnings exceed $100,000 dollars.
