About

The Spirituals are a genre of African American religious folk songs that originated in the southern United States during the 18th and 19th centuries. They were originally sung by enslaved Africans as a way to express their faith, cope with the hardships of slavery, and communicate with each other.

Many of these songs had coded messages that allowed slaves to communicate important information to each other without their masters realizing. For example, the song “Wade in the Water” was often used as a message for slaves to escape through water, since it was believed that following a river or stream would make it harder for bloodhounds to track them.

The Spirituals have had a profound impact on American music and culture, influencing many genres from gospel to blues to rock and roll. They also played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement, as they were often sung during protests and marches as a way to inspire and uplift activists.

Wade in the water lyrics

Wade in the water
We dey wade in the water
Children wade in the water
God said he’s gonna trouble the water

Wade in the water
We dey wade in the water
Children wade in the water
God’s gonna trouble the water

We are the sons and the daughters
We gotta stand up and make it loud
Just like our God told the Pharaoh
“Let my people go, go”

We are a new generation
From the ones who have come before
He’s calling us into freedom
Let my people go, go

Wade in the water
We dey wade in the water
Children wade in the water
God said he’s gonna trouble the water

Wade in the water
We dey wade in the water
Children wade in the water
God’s gonna trouble the water

We are the sons and the daughters
We gotta stand up and make it loud
Just like our God told the Pharaoh
“Let my people go, go”

We are a new generation
From the ones who have come before
He’s calling us into freedom
Let my people go, go

We no go shy, no go shame
Ibi your papa God wey, ‘e make the heavens
If you know sey you no want trouble
Let my people go, go

With blood, sweat and tears
That we’ve gathered through the years
If you know sey you no want trouble
Let my people go, go

Wade in the water
We dey wade in the water
Children wade in the water
God said he’s gonna trouble the water

Wade in the water
We dey wade in the water
Children wade in the water
God’s gonna trouble the water

Wade in the water
We dey wade in the water
Children wade in the water
God’s said he’s gonna trouble the water

Wade in the water
We dey wade in the water
Children wade in the water
God’s gonna trouble the water
