Treatment

Decompression sickness (DCS) is a serious condition that can occur when a diver ascends to the surface too quickly. DCS occurs when nitrogen bubbles form in the diver's blood and tissues. These bubbles can block blood flow and cause damage to the diver's organs and tissues. Symptoms of DCS can include pain, numbness, paralysis, and even death.

Diving bell incidents are a common cause of DCS. When a diving bell loses pressure, the divers inside are rapidly brought to the surface. This can cause the divers to experience DCS. Symptoms of DCS can begin within minutes of surfacing. Therefore, it is important for divers who experience a diving bell incident to seek immediate medical treatment.

Treatment for DCS typically involves recompression therapy. Recompression therapy is a process in which the diver is placed in a chamber and the pressure is slowly increased. This helps to dissolve the nitrogen bubbles and relieve the symptoms of DCS. Recompression therapy can be a long and difficult process, but it is often the only way to prevent permanent injury or death from DCS.
