The original play

The original play by George Bernard Shaw, upon which the musical and film My Fair Lady is based, provides the foundation for understanding the character of Eliza Doolittle and her marital status. In Shaw's play, Eliza is a strong-willed and independent woman who is determined to improve her social status. She is not interested in marriage, and she ultimately rejects the advances of Freddy Eynsford-Hill, a young man from a wealthy family. This decision reflects Eliza's belief that she can achieve her goals on her own, without the need for a husband.

• Eliza's motivations: Eliza is motivated by a desire to improve her social status and to be treated with respect. She believes that marriage to Freddy Eynsford-Hill would not help her to achieve these goals, and she is unwilling to compromise her independence.
• Eliza's character development: Over the course of the play, Eliza grows and changes as a character. She becomes more confident and self-assured, and she learns to value her own worth. This growth leads her to make choices that are in her own best interests, including the decision not to marry.
• The play's social commentary: Shaw's play is a commentary on the social conventions of his time. Eliza's rejection of marriage is a challenge to the traditional view that women should be subservient to men. It is also a reflection of the changing social roles of women in the early 20th century.

The fact that Eliza Doolittle is not married in the original play is significant because it challenges the traditional view of women as being defined by their marital status. It also highlights Eliza's strength and independence, and her determination to live life on her own terms.

The 1964 film adaptation

The 1964 film adaptation of My Fair Lady is a significant factor in the question of whether or not Abigail Doolittle is married. The film's producers made the decision to change the ending of the original play, in which Eliza Doolittle does not marry Freddy Eynsford-Hill, to give the film a more traditional happy ending. This change has had a lasting impact on the way that audiences view the character of Eliza Doolittle and her story.

There are several reasons why the film's producers may have made the decision to change the ending of the play. First, the film was made during a time when audiences were more accustomed to seeing happy endings in their movies. A marriage between Eliza Doolittle and Freddy Eynsford-Hill would have been seen as a more satisfying conclusion to the story than Eliza remaining single.

Second, the film's producers may have felt that a marriage between Eliza Doolittle and Freddy Eynsford-Hill would be more realistic. In the film, Eliza Doolittle is transformed from a poor flower girl into a refined lady. It is natural to assume that she would eventually marry someone from her new social class.

Whatever the reasons, the decision to change the ending of the play has had a significant impact on the way that audiences view the character of Eliza Doolittle. For many people, the film's ending is the definitive version of the story, and they may not be aware that the original play has a different ending. This can lead to confusion about whether or not Abigail Doolittle is married.

It is important to remember that the film adaptation of My Fair Lady is just one interpretation of the story. The original play by George Bernard Shaw is still widely read and performed, and it offers a different perspective on the character of Eliza Doolittle and her story.

The character's motivations

Eliza Doolittle's motivations are a key factor in understanding whether or not she marries Freddy Eynsford-Hill. In both the play and the film, Eliza is driven by a desire to improve her social status. She believes that marriage to Freddy would help her to achieve this goal, as it would give her access to his wealth and social connections.

In the play, Eliza's motivations are more complex. She is also motivated by a desire for independence and self-respect. She does not want to be seen as a mere object to be bought and sold, and she is determined to make her own way in life. However, she also recognizes that marriage to Freddy would give her a certain degree of security and stability. Ultimately, Eliza's decision to marry Freddy is a compromise between her desire for independence and her desire for social advancement.

In the film, Eliza's motivations are somewhat simpler. She is primarily motivated by a desire to improve her social status. She believes that marriage to Freddy would be a way for her to escape her current life and to enter a world of wealth and privilege. She is not as concerned with independence and self-respect as she is in the play.
