His death is a senseless loss of life, and it highlights the need for urgent action to address the issue of police violence against Black people.

Racial profiling: Black people are disproportionately likely to be stopped, frisked, and arrested by the police, even when they are not suspected of any crime. This is due to the racist stereotypes that many police officers hold about Black people.
Use of excessive force: Police officers are more likely to use excessive force against Black people, even when they are not justified in doing so. This is often due to the implicit biases that police officers hold about Black people.
Lack of accountability: Police officers are rarely held accountable for their actions, even when they use excessive force or kill unarmed Black people. This is due to the qualified immunity doctrine, which makes it difficult to sue police officers for misconduct.

Officer

The officer involved in the shooting of Carlos Collins was Ray Tensing, a white police officer who was later charged with murder and fired from the police department. Tensing's actions that led to Collins' death highlight the systemic racism and police brutality that continue to plague our society.

Tensing's decision to shoot Collins was based on implicit racial bias. Implicit racial bias is the unconscious association of negative stereotypes with Black people. This bias can lead to police officers perceiving Black people as more threatening and dangerous than they actually are. In the case of Collins, Tensing's implicit racial bias likely led him to perceive Collins as a threat, even though Collins was unarmed and posed no threat to him.

Tensing's actions also highlight the lack of accountability that police officers often face for their misconduct. Despite shooting an unarmed Black man, Tensing was initially acquitted of murder charges. This lack of accountability sends a message that police officers can kill Black people with impunity. It also erodes public trust in the police and makes it more difficult to build relationships between the police and the communities they serve.

The death of Carlos Collins is a tragic reminder of the urgent need to address the systemic racism and police brutality that continue to plague our society.
