The Real Story Behind the Fall Movie
William Smith
The B67 TV Tower is a real structure that stands at 2,049 feet (625 meters) in Walnut Grove, California.
It is one of the tallest towers in the world and has been the subject of a recent Netflix movie called Fall, which depicts two climbers who get trapped at the top of the tower and face a life-or-death situation.
But what is the true story behind this tower and how did it become such a fascinating and terrifying location?
In this article, we will explore the history, construction, and current status of the B67 TV Tower, as well as the facts and fiction behind the Fall movie.
How did they build the B67 TV tower?
The B67 TV Tower was built in 2000 by Sacramento Joint Venture, a partnership between two local TV stations: KXTV and KOVR.
The tower was designed to broadcast its signals over a large area, covering Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, and beyond.
It is a guyed mast, which means it is supported by steel cables that are anchored to the ground.
The tower has three sections:
The top section has a triangular shape that holds three antennas for each station.
The tower also has a Doppler weather radar station next to it.
The construction of the tower was a challenging and dangerous project that involved several cranes, helicopters, and workers.
The tower was built in segments that were lifted and attached by cranes.
The workers had to climb up and down the tower to install the cables, antennas, and lights.
The tower was completed in about six months and cost about $10 million.
Abandoned B67 TV Tower in California
The B67 TV Tower was operational for about 20 years until it was abandoned in 2020.
The reason for its abandonment was the transition from analog to digital broadcasting, which made the tower obsolete.
The digital signals required less power and could be transmitted from smaller towers.
The two stations that owned the tower decided to move their antennas to another nearby tower that was taller and more modern.
The B67 TV Tower was left unused and unattended, becoming an eyesore and a potential hazard.
The tower is still standing today, but it is not accessible to the public.
It is surrounded by fences and signs that warn of high voltage and trespassing.
The tower is also monitored by security cameras and guards.
However, some thrill-seekers have tried to climb the tower despite the risks and restrictions.
Some have succeeded, while others have failed or even died.
KXTV/KOVR Tower Death
One of the most tragic incidents that occurred at the B67 TV Tower was the death of two climbers in 2023.
The climbers were Becky and Hunter, two friends who were avid adventurers and thrill-seekers.
They had climbed many tall structures before, but they wanted to conquer the B67 TV Tower as their ultimate challenge.
They planned their climb carefully and secretly, avoiding security and waiting for the right weather conditions.
Becky and Hunter started their climb at night, using headlamps and ropes.
They reached the top of the tower after several hours of climbing.
They were ecstatic and took photos and videos of their achievement.
Becky and Hunter planned to descend before dawn, but they encountered a problem.
Their rope got tangled in one of the antennas and they could not free it.
They tried to call for help, but their phones had no signal.
They were stuck at the top of the tower with no way down.
Becky and Hunter waited for hours, hoping that someone would notice them or rescue them. But no one came.
They started to panic and lose hope.
They suffered from dehydration, exhaustion, and exposure.
The climbers realized that they had no chance of survival.
They decided to end their lives by jumping off the tower.
They recorded their final messages on their phones and said goodbye to each other.
Becky and Hunter jumped together, holding hands.
Their bodies were found later that day by a farmer who saw them falling from the sky.
Their phones were also recovered and their videos were released to the media.
The deaths shocked and saddened many people who knew them or followed their adventures online.
Their deaths also raised questions about the safety and security of the B67 TV Tower and other abandoned structures.
