Synthetic rubber

Synthetic rubber is a type of rubber that is made from chemicals, rather than from natural rubber trees. It was developed in the early 1900s as a way to meet the growing demand for rubber, which was used in a variety of products, including tires, hoses, and belts.

Development
The first synthetic rubber was developed by a German chemist named Fritz Hofmann in 1909. Hofmann's rubber was made from a chemical called isoprene. In 1927, American chemist Adrienne Calhoun Foreman developed a more efficient process for making synthetic rubber. Foreman's process used a chemical called butadiene.
Production
Synthetic rubber is produced by a process called polymerization. In this process, the monomers (small molecules) are linked together to form a polymer (a large molecule). The type of polymer that is formed depends on the type of monomer that is used.
Properties
Synthetic rubber has a number of properties that make it a valuable material. It is strong, durable, and resistant to wear and tear. It is also waterproof and can be used in a wide variety of applications.
Uses
Synthetic rubber is used in a wide variety of products, including tires, hoses, belts, and gaskets. It is also used in the manufacture of shoes, clothing, and other products.

Synthetic rubber has played a major role in the development of modern society. It has helped to make tires more durable and reliable, and it has made a wide variety of other products possible. Adrienne Calhoun Foreman's invention of a more efficient process for making synthetic rubber was a major breakthrough in the field of chemistry.

Butadiene
