Songs Ne Yo Wrote: A successful Ghostwriter

Creating a smash record is a rare skill in the music industry, especially if it’s for another artist.

Ne-Yo possesses this talent and has written successful songs for Beyoncé, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston, and Mario, among others.

His work often reaches number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Since starting his career in the late 90s, Ne-Yo has proven himself to be an expert in writing great R&B and soul records.

He’s not only a talented singer but also a skilled songwriter and producer.

Who Is Ne Yo?

Ne-Yo is a highly acclaimed artist who made a name for himself in the 2000s.

He gained mainstream recognition as a songwriter for Mario’s “Let Me Love You” in 2004, which became a number one pop hit.

Ne-Yo’s inspiration came from Michael Jackson and Babyface, and he emerged as a versatile performer, singer, and composer.

He achieved significant milestones in his career, including the eighth most successful single of the decade with “Let Me Love You” as determined by Billboard.

Songs Ne Yo Wrote

Here are some of the instances where Ne-Yo showcased his exceptional abilities.

• Irreplaceable by Beyoncé

Ne-yo’s hit song is about a woman who has had enough. He originally wrote it from a male perspective, but realized that women could express certain things men couldn’t without backlash.

The singer-songwriter explained this to The Cleveland Scene. If a man sang the song, he would risk alienating his female audience.

• Knock You Down by Keri Hilson ft. Ne-yo and Kanye West

Ne-yo wrote the song that debuted at 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Later, it climbed to No. 3. Rapper Kanye West contributed a verse to the song.

• Give Me Everything by Pitbull

American rapper Pitbull released “Give Me Everything” on March 18, 2011 as the second single from his sixth studio album, Planet Pit (2011).

The song is a fusion of hip hop, pop, and “Broadway-style theatricality”. It was written by  Ne-Yo, Matt Howard, and Afrojack.

• Epiphany (I’m Leaving) by Chrisette Michele

Michele named her album after the leading single written by Ne-Yo.

In an interview with Billboard magazine, Michele explained that she heard the song called ‘Epiphany’ and the word caught her attention.

She said that the word stood out to her because of her experiences in her previous relationship.

The word ‘epiphany’ exemplified what happened in the end when Michele realized that she didn’t have to put herself through the pain anymore.

• Take A Bow by Rihana

Barbadian singer Rihanna recorded “Take a Bow” for Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded (2008), the re-release of her third studio album.

The song became the first single from the re-release and fifth overall from both releases.

Critics had mixed responses to “Take a Bow.” Some praised the powerful balladry impact of the song’s lyrics, while others criticized StarGate’s production for lacking originality.

Songs Ne Yo Wrote; How songwriters get paid

NeYo’s name may not be on his most famous work. However, he has won three Grammy awards for his R&B albums and debuted two albums in the Billboard Top 200.

Although “Closer” is his most popular song, it pales in comparison to his written works.

The Government controls what songwriters are paid

No law dictates the cost of an album or digital download, instead, it’s determined by capitalism or record executives.

They identify consumer willingness to pay and production costs to set a value that maximizes profits for all parties involved.

This model has been used since the creation and distribution of physical copies of music. However, this only applies to half of the music industry’s revenue stream.

Songs Ne Yo Wrote: How he earns from royalties

Songwriters focus mainly on the musical composition license as it determines their pay.

In 2015, the music industry faced a heated debate over the compensation of artists and songwriters for their work.

The rise in streaming and decline in music sales led to a significant decrease in pay for musicians.

Listeners’ changing behavior led to a decrease in the compensation for streams compared to physical copies.

This sparked discussions about the appropriate compensation for artists and songwriters.

However, performers had an advantage over songwriters since they had more control over their music, making it easier for them to take action and demand better compensation.

Despite the challenges faced by songwriters, the debate continued as the industry worked to find a solution that would benefit all involved parties.
