Who Is Michael Caine?

Sir Michael Caine, CBE, is an English retired actor who has spoken this week about his desire to retire from acting after an eight-decade career that was laced with several accomplishments and several movie appearances.

For his roles as Elliot in Woody Allen’s comedy Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and as Dr. Wilbur Larch in Lasse Hallström’s drama The Cider House Rules (1999), Michael Caine received two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor. Alfie (1966), Sleuth (1972), Educating Rita (1983), and The Quiet American (2002) got him Oscar nominations. His roles in California Suite (1978), Dressed to Kill (1980), Mona Lisa (1986), Little Voice (1998), Quills (2000), Children of Men (2006), Harry Brown (2009), and Youth (2015) are also notable in his eight-year acting career.

His accomplishments in the movie industry are things that his grandchildren will grow to be proud of. In his retirement, Michael Caine’s grandchildren can tap into his wisdom, as he may have valuable tips for them on how to build and sustain a career as long as he did.

Michael Caine was born on March 14, 1933. His parents were cook and charwoman Ellen Frances Marie (1901–1989) and fish market porter Maurice Joseph Micklewhite (1899–1957).

Discussions this week have centered on his retirement after so many years.

The British actor, whose career spanned eight decades and included roles in films including “The Italian Job” and “The Dark Knight,” has announced his retirement from acting. On Saturday, the 90-year-old two-time Oscar winner made the announcement on BBC Radio 4’s “Best of Today” podcast.

“I keep saying I’m going to retire,” said Caine, adding, “Well, I am now.”

He confirmed that “The Great Escaper,” which was released earlier this month, will be his last acting gig, saying: “I’ve played the lead, and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m going to get now are old men—90-year-old men, or maybe 85, you know—and I thought well I might as well leave with all this. I’ve got wonderful reviews. What am I going to do to beat this?”
