Margot Frank Facts

Her middle name “Betti” was inspired by her aunt’s name Bettina “Betti” Hollander.

Her parents were interested in scholarly pursuits and encouraged their daughters to read. The family also had an extensive library.

She spent her childhood years growing up in Frankfurt and both Margot and Anne grew up playing with the children of the neighborhood who all had different backgrounds. There was a sense of curiosity amongst the children regarding each other’s religions and beliefs and Margot was invited to the communion celebration of one of her friends while the neighbors’ children were sometimes invited to Frank’s celebration of Hanukkah.

It was in the summer of 1932 that the Nazis’ paramilitary wing – Sturmabteilung (SA) – marched through the streets of Frankfurt am Main wearing swastika armbands as they loudly sang: “When Jewish blood spurts from the knife, things will go well again”. After that, her parents became concerned about the situation but it was difficult for them to just leave their homeland immediately because it seemed impossible to make a living abroad.

In December 1933, she relocated to Amsterdam and continued her education. She went on to become a star student.

As the anti-Jewish measures kept increasing, Margot and Anne had to attend a Jewish school with only Jewish students and teachers after the summer of 1941.

She was known to have many friends and liked rowing and playing tennis in her spare time.

Reportedly, she also maintained a diary like her sister but no trace of it has ever been found.

According to Anne’s diary, Margot had a modest and tolerant nature and shared a closer bond with their mother who often suggested Anne follow in Margot’s footsteps.

She took an interest in Jewish traditions and became involved in Amsterdam’s Liberal Jewish community. She went on to take Hebrew classes, attend synagogue, and join a Dutch Zionist club in 1941. The club consisted of young people who wanted to immigrate to Palestine in order to found a Jewish state.

Margot aspired to become a midwife.

She was 16 years old when she went into hiding after receiving a notice on July 5, 1942, to report to a labor camp in Germany.
