This article talks about the Largest kidney stones that have now broken the world record.

In a remarkable medical feat, Sri Lankan officials have confirmed that a kidney stone larger than a baseball was successfully extracted from a patient earlier this month.

This broke multiple world records due to its astonishing size.

The patient, identified as Canistus Coonge, a 62-year-old retired soldier, underwent surgery on June 1 at the Columbo Army Hospital in the capital city, as reported by AFP.

Largest kidney stones

The Sri Lanka Army, in a recent news release, disclosed that the grapefruit-sized kidney stone removed during the procedure has been officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the “largest and heaviest kidney stone” ever extracted through major surgery.

Measuring a staggering 13.372 centimeters (approximately 5.2 inches) in length, the stone weighed a remarkable 801 grams (about 1.76 pounds).

Striking images released by the Sri Lankan army depict the colossal stone being carefully weighed and measured inside the operating room post-surgery.

Guinness World Records later verified that this kidney stone surpassed the size and weight of the stones previously holding those records.

Prior to the groundbreaking surgery in Columbo, the largest kidney stone on record was discovered in India back in 2004, measuring 13 centimeters (approximately 5.1 inches) in length.

Heaviest kidney stones

Additionally, the heaviest kidney stone, weighing 620 grams (approximately 1.2 pounds), was found in Pakistan in 2008, according to the Guinness Directory.

According to the National Institutes of Health, a kidney stone is a solid mass resembling a pebble that can form in one or both kidneys due to high levels of specific minerals in the urine.

While smaller stones can pass through the urinary tract without causing noticeable symptoms, larger stones can result in back, side, lower abdominal, or groin pain, as well as the presence of blood in the urine.

Medical treatments for kidney stones usually involve breaking the stone into smaller fragments or complete removal, depending on the circumstances.

This groundbreaking surgical achievement in Sri Lanka showcases the incredible skill and expertise of the medical professionals involved, who successfully managed the complex task of removing such an immense kidney stone.

The record-breaking procedure not only highlights the remarkable progress in medical science but also serves as an inspiration for further advancements in the field of urology, ultimately benefiting patients worldwide.
