This deep love for the guitar led him to make a significant life decision, leaving his studies in literature at the University of Connecticut to attend the Hartford Conservatory of Music.

Upon graduating from the conservatory, Sonni’s path crossed with renowned New York session guitarist Elliott Randall, famous for his solo on “Reelin’ In the Years.”

Randall became both a mentor and teacher to Sonni, urging him to make the move to New York City and embark on his musical career. From 1976 to 1985, Sonni called New York home as he pursued his musical aspirations.

He made notable contributions to their music, including playing the guitar synthesizer on “The Man’s Too Strong” and performing at the historic Live Aid concert at Wembley in 1985.

After his tenure with Dire Straits, Sonni turned his focus to other musical collaborations but eventually stepped away from professional music when he welcomed twin daughters in 1988.

He embarked on a second career as a marketing executive, working at Seymour Duncan, Rivera Guitar Amplifiers, and Line 6, where he played a pivotal role in the development and launch of the iconic POD product.

His marketing expertise also led him to become Vice President of Marketing Communication for Guitar Center in 2001.

In 2006, Sonni decided to pursue his passion for literature and began writing. He later relocated to various places, including San Jose del Cabo and Healdsburg, California.

He served as a writer-in-residence and house manager at the Noepe Center for Literary Arts on Martha’s Vineyard until its closure in 2017.
