That’s right, it’s a Fry-day!

There are actually two versions of National French Fry Day, and they have different origins and histories.

The History of National French Fry Day

The first version of National French Fry Day is observed on July 13 every year.

This date was chosen by the National Day Calendar, a website that tracks fun, unusual, and unique national days.

According to the National Day Calendar, the term “French fries” refers to deep-fried slices or strips of potatoes that were popularized by the French in the mid-1700s.

They were sold on street carts called “frites” and were cut in various shapes and sizes.

The National Day Calendar also credits Thomas Jefferson for bringing French fries to America.

Jefferson was an ambassador to France and served “potatoes served in the French manner” at a White House dinner in 1802.

However, some people dispute this version of history and claim that French fries are not really French at all.

They say that French fries were invented by Belgians in the 17th century when they sliced potatoes like fish fillets and fried them in hot fat during winters when fishing was difficult.

They also say that American soldiers who were stationed in Belgium during World War I called them “French” fries because they spoke French, the dominant language in southern Belgium.

The second version of National French Fry Day is observed on the second Friday in July every year.

This date was proposed by Checkers & Rally’s, a fast-food chain that specializes in fries, in 2022.

They gathered online petition signatures asking the National Day Calendar to move National French Fry Day to a Friday so that it would always be a Fry-day.

The National Day Calendar agreed and made the change official.

However, not all French fry lovers have accepted this change.

Some still prefer to celebrate on July 13, while others celebrate on both days or any day they want.
