Montell Du’Sean Barnett, who was given the name, was born four days before his mother Deloris’ 18th birthday. He had never seen his biological father in person and had only ever seen a few pictures of him. His mother wed Elijah Jordan, a bookkeeper, when he was a little boy. Montell addressed Elijah as his father. He subsequently discarded the surname Barnett and adopted the name Montell Jordan.

Did Montell Jordan ever play basketball?

Montell Jordan shared a dorm at Pepperdine with former NBA star Doug Christie, who is also Jackie Christie’s spouse and a prisoner. Despite being six feet eight inches tall, Montell told NBA.com that he didn’t participate on the basketball team. Montell was in charge of washing the team’s uniforms as one of the equipment managers.

He grew up attending a Baptist church. Montell played the piano in the choir and his parents were deacons. He admitted to living in a lower-middle class family with ongoing financial issues, according to the Los Angeles Times.

When he was 11 years old, he discovered rap music, but he had no interest in becoming a rapper. His passion has always been for classic R&B. He was raised on the music of some of his parents’ favorite performers, such as Teddy Pendergrass, Isaac Hayes, and The Spinners. He would jot down rap lyrics, but he sang them rather than rapped them.

Although he was creating his own distinctive style, it would take some time before the world would recognize his brilliance.
