Diane Sawyer Facts

When she was a baby, her family moved to Louisville.

Her father, who was a popular Republican politician, community leader, and Kentucky’s Jefferson County Judge/Executive passed away in a car accident in 1969, and the E. P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park, in the Frey’s Hill area of Louisville, was built in his honor.

While she was in school, she served as editor-in-chief for her school newspaper, The Arrow.

Growing up, she always felt that she was living in her older sister, Linda’s shadow.

As a teen, she was insecure and somewhat a loner and hanged out with a group of friends who called themselves “reincarnated transcendentalist”.

In 1963, during her senior year of high school, she won annual national America’s Junior Miss scholarship pageant, representing the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

While at the Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, she was a member of an a cappella-singing group called the Wellesley College Blue Notes and was also a part of the Phi Sigma Lecture Society.

Forbes magazine, in their report titled “List of The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women,” stated that Diane earned approximately $12 million from entertainment alone between June 2005 and June 2008.

She is a member of Broadcast Magazine Hall of Fame and the Television Academy of Fame.

She started her career in broadcasting as a reporter at WLKY-TV in Louisville, Kentucky.

In 1984, she became the first female correspondent for CBS News’ investigative show, 60 Minutes.

She was born precisely at 8:00 AM–CST.

She mentioned “tennis, basketball, being a Young Republican and, when time permits, knitting,” as the list of activities she likes doing during her first pageant run.

Diane had a dog named Lila, named after her first name.

The stories that she covered, which still resonates within her include the West Virginia mining tragedy and the Haiti Earthquake.

If she weren’t a journalist, she would probably be auditioning for some sad-song piano bar, since she has a very bizarre and eccentric attachment to sorrowful songs.
