Who can drive

To rent a U-Haul and have someone else drive, the additional driver must meet certain requirements, including being at least 18 years old, having a valid driver's license, and having a good driving record. These requirements are in place to ensure that the additional driver is qualified to operate the rental truck safely.

The requirement that the additional driver be at least 18 years old is based on the fact that most states have a minimum age requirement of 18 for driving. This requirement helps to ensure that the additional driver is old enough to have the necessary experience and maturity to operate a rental truck safely.

The requirement that the additional driver have a valid driver's license is also based on state law. A valid driver's license indicates that the additional driver has passed a driving test and is qualified to operate a motor vehicle.

The requirement that the additional driver have a good driving record is designed to help ensure that the additional driver is a safe driver. A good driving record indicates that the additional driver has not been involved in any accidents or traffic violations.

These requirements are in place to help protect both the renter and U-Haul. By ensuring that the additional driver is qualified to operate the rental truck safely, U-Haul can help to reduce the risk of accidents and damage to the rental truck.

Adding a driver

The ability to add an additional driver to the rental agreement is an important part of renting a U-Haul and having someone else drive. It allows you to share the responsibility of driving the rental truck, which can be helpful if you are moving a long distance or if you are not comfortable driving a large vehicle. It can also be helpful if you need to take a break from driving or if you need to run errands while someone else drives the rental truck.

There is an additional fee for adding an additional driver to the rental agreement. The fee varies depending on the location and the length of the rental period. However, it is typically a small fee, and it is worth it for the peace of mind of knowing that you have another qualified driver available to drive the rental truck.

To add an additional driver to the rental agreement, you will need to provide the additional driver's information to U-Haul. This includes the additional driver's name, address, date of birth, and driver's license number. You will also need to sign a new rental agreement that includes the additional driver.

Once the additional driver has been added to the rental agreement, they will be able to drive the rental truck at any time during the rental period. They will also be responsible for following all of the terms and conditions of the rental agreement.

Insurance

When you rent a U-Haul, you are responsible for the vehicle and any damage that occurs while it is being driven. This includes damage caused by an additional driver. Therefore, it is important to make sure that the additional driver is covered by insurance.

U-Haul offers optional insurance coverage for additional drivers. This coverage is designed to protect the additional driver in the event of an accident. The coverage includes liability insurance, which covers damage to other vehicles and property, and collision insurance, which covers damage to the rental truck.

The cost of the optional insurance coverage varies depending on the length of the rental period and the type of coverage you choose. However, it is typically a small fee, and it is worth it for the peace of mind of knowing that the additional driver is covered in the event of an accident.

In addition to the optional insurance coverage offered by U-Haul, the additional driver may also be covered by their own personal insurance policy. However, it is important to check with the insurance company to make sure that the policy covers the additional driver while they are driving a rental truck.

If the additional driver is not covered by insurance, they could be held personally liable for any damage that occurs while they are driving the rental truck. This could include the cost of repairs to the rental truck, as well as any other damages that are caused.

Therefore, it is important to make sure that the additional driver is covered by insurance before they drive the rental truck.

This could lead to an accident, which could result in injuries or damage to the rental truck. In such a case, U-Haul could be held liable for the accident, even if the person renting the U-Haul was not driving the truck at the time of the accident.
