Biggest Turtle In The World, Their Adaptation, Breeding, And Lifespan

The leatherback is the biggest living sea turtle.

Leatherback Turtles are the biggest turtle in the world

The leatherback sea turtle (biggest turtle in the world), a massive creature weighing between 550 and 2,000 pounds and reaching lengths of up to six feet.

It is easily recognizable by its distinct lack of a hard shell or scales.

Instead, it boasts a firm, rubbery skin that sets it apart from other sea turtle species.

Although leatherback sea turtles go as far as north as Canada and the northern Pacific Ocean, they typically prefer nesting in tropical regions.

Within the United States, these turtles are known to nest in southeast Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

One of the leatherback sea turtle’s primary food sources is jellyfish.

The U.S. federal government has designated the leatherback sea turtle as an endangered species worldwide.

The primary threats to these turtles include accidental capture in commercial fisheries, marine pollution, and the harvesting of their egg.

Adaptation;

Unlike their reptilian relatives, leatherbacks maintain warm body temperatures in cold water through a unique set of adaptations.

These adaptations encompass their large body size, adjustments in swimming activity and blood flow, and the presence of a thick layer of fat, all of which enable them to both generate and retain body heat.

Reproduction

Leatherback sea turtles make the longest migrations between their breeding and feeding areas among all sea turtles.

On average, they travel about 3,700 miles each way.

When it’s breeding season, the female turtles mate in the sea and then come ashore.

During the night, they perform a series of actions.

They dig a hole in the sand, lay around 80 eggs, cover the nest, which creates a messy, hard-to-spot area in the sand to deter predators, and finally, they head back to the ocean.

The temperature inside the nest decides the sex of the hatchlings.

When the nest temperature is roughly 85.1 degrees Fahrenheit, you get a mix of male and female hatchlings.

Higher temperatures lead to females, while cooler temperatures result in males.

Female hatchlings that manage to reach the sea will wander the oceans until they become adults, and then they return to the same nesting areas to have their own babies.

As for the males, they spend their entire lives in the sea.
