Born Astrud Evangelina Weinert on March 29, 1940, in Bahia, Brazil, Astrud Gilberto became an unforgettable name in the music industry, leaving an everlasting impression with her mesmerizing vocals and unwavering commitment to her artistry.

Growing up in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, Astrud was immersed in a world of music from an early age. Her mother, Evangelina Neves Lobo Weinert, possessed a remarkable talent for playing multiple instruments, while her father, a language professor, instilled in her a love for languages. Astrud’s fluency in several tongues would later become a powerful tool in expressing emotions through her songs.

In 1959, Astrud embarked on a life-changing journey when she married João Gilberto, a trailblazing figure in the Bossa Nova genre. Together, they ventured into the realm of music, captivating audiences in Brazil with their heartfelt duets. Their union brought forth a son named João Marcelo Gilberto, who would continue their musical legacy by joining Astrud’s band.

While Astrud’s professional recording debut took place in 1963 on the renowned album “Getz/Gilberto,” featuring João Gilberto, Stan Getz, and Antônio Carlos Jobim, her stage presence was already well-established. Her enchanting voice had graced numerous performances alongside her husband, capturing listeners’ hearts with her tender delivery. However, it was her rendition of “The Girl from Ipanema” on the album that propelled her to international stardom.

“The Girl from Ipanema” became an instant sensation, and Astrud’s velvety voice became inseparable from the song.
