Cause

Abby Hornacek's eye injury was caused by a pencil puncture. This type of injury is relatively rare, but it can have devastating consequences. In Abby's case, the pencil puncture caused a detached retina, which required multiple surgeries to repair. The injury also caused significant vision loss.

• Eye anatomy: The eye is a complex organ with many different parts. The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye. It is responsible for converting light into electrical signals that are sent to the brain. The cornea is the clear, front part of the eye. It helps to focus light on the retina.
• Mechanism of injury: When a pencil is forcefully poked into the eye, it can pierce the cornea and damage the retina. The retina can become detached from the back of the eye, which can lead to vision loss. In some cases, the pencil can also damage the lens of the eye, causing a traumatic cataract.

Injury

A detached retina is a serious eye injury that can lead to blindness if not treated promptly. This can happen as a result of a number of different factors, including eye trauma, certain medical conditions, and even aging. In Abby Hornacek's case, her detached retina was caused by a pencil puncture injury.

• Retinal detachment surgery: This surgery is performed to reattach the retina to the back of the eye. It is a delicate procedure that requires a great deal of skill and precision.
• Corneal laceration repair: This surgery is performed to repair a tear in the cornea. The cornea is the clear, front part of the eye. A corneal laceration can be caused by a variety of factors, including eye injuries.
